When I grew up in Boulder, the drive to Denver went something like this: after climbing the grassy hill out of Boulder Valley, there was a taxidermist's house with a preserved giraffe on the roof, three somewhat run down model A-frame homes, a few ponds, fences, and cows, and a lot of open space. It's different now. These songs came from a desire to reconcile my memory of being the boy in the back seat watching a unique and rural world fly by, with the man now driving his son to a birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese's amidst countless retail outlets, all on the same stretch of road. Two concept albums (the Kinks' Arthur and the demo for Randy Newman's Good Old Boys) inspired me to both write from a character's perspective, and to devote a series of songs to try to capture the feeling of a time and place. When Do agreed to produce and record the songs and Lori agreed to sing them, the project became much more than I could ever have hoped, and I cannot thank them enough for all they have put into this album. I am deeply grateful to everyone who sang, played, listened, critiqued, encouraged, and contributed to this music. Thank you. |
